In Korea and Japan, electric bidets installed above the toilet have become incredibly popular since the 2000s. They are now ubiquitous in nearly every home, shopping mall, office, and even in the public restroom.

These high-tech devices come with various features: the cover opens and closes automatically, the seat is heated, warm air dries you after use, and some even flush by themselves. It’s a luxurious experience that many find comfortable and convenient. I’ve heard that some Chinese bidets can clean the toilet bowl itself, and certain Japanese models even play music while you use them. For those wondering why the music is necessary, it’s designed to mask any sounds users might make in the toilet—a thoughtful touch for privacy.

However, despite the convenience of these high-tech bidets, I prefer the traditional Italian bidet. While technology can make life easier, it sometimes feels excessive, even in the bathroom. The Italian bidet, with its simplicity and dedicated use, feels more hygienic and requires far less maintenance. It’s a no-frills historical solution that focuses on practicality and cleanliness.

Italians should take pride in their bidet culture and promote it more widely. Research shows that lower body hygiene is significantly healthier in countries where bidets are commonly used. This is a compelling selling point that could appeal to the rest of the world. (Bidet, person or both)
